Assembly Work at HomeMany times, this sort of work is actually done at a factory. But there ARE manufacturers who will hire those to put together their product out of their home. Finding the companies that will hire you to do this can be difficult, but it is possible (see our recommended companies below). Many of the ads you see for this sort of work are scams, so beware when you read them. These are much like the envelope stuffing work from home scams. Be very careful to research the companies, contacting the Better Business Bureau in their state to see if there are any complaints or negative ratings. Sadly, many moms looking for this type of work fall prey to scams and get rich schemes, so buyer beware! The best way to spot work at home scams is if the company asks for a fee or deposit or registration fee of some sort (with the exception of the companies recommended below). They claim it's to get you started with instructions and materials. The companies will then send you items and directions - and normally you must make the first item(s) and send it back for a quality assessment of your product. This is where it gets sticky. The scam companies will never pass your work, no matter how good the work or product is. They will nit-pick at the product sending it back (usually at your expense) until you finally give up. So the scamming company has made their money from that initial fee and they never intend to pay you a penny. So it pays YOU to be very careful. A true company that will hire you will not require a 'registration' fee of any sort up front and will have a good standing with the Better Business Bureau - and if you ask you should be able to acquire references from them from other employees.
REAL Assembly Work at HomeThe Disciple's Cross Program is one of the few legitimate assembly work at home opportunities we've come across. The job is straightforward - you make (by hand) the Disciple's Crosses which became hugely popular after being worn on air by 'Survivor: Thailand' contestant Pastor John Raymond. The crosses are simple to make and you do NOT have to sell them - the company buys them from you at a cost of $1.25 per cross plus $1 each for material reimbursement. There IS an initial outlay for the materials, but in this case the set-up costs are justified and you are NOT committed to buying a minimum amount of supplies each month. You simply buy the quantity of materials you need as and when necessary and make as many - or as few - crosses as you have time for.
Another popular company offering assembly work at home is the Magical Gift Company. Again, there is a start up fee to buy your materials, but you can then earn a decent income assembling jewelry and other gifts at home. There are options for different types of work, including painting, working with clay, working with a glue gun and sewing. This company prides itself on the fact that all its products truly are handmade in the USA!
Another option to consider if you have something of an artistic flair is crafting at home. Requiring a little more skill than general assembly work at home, crafting gives you the opportunity to do something you love whilst getting paid for doing it! ArtFire is an online marketplace where you can sell your homemade creations free of charge (although there are paid upgrades available). Cafepress allows you to print items like T-shirts, stationery and gifts with YOUR artwork on a 'print on demand' basis, so you don't need to invest any money. You can then set up a free store on their site to display your wares.
And you can, of course, sell your craft work on eBay or the hugely popular online marketplace for crafters, Etsy (although these do require a small listing fee).
I am always interested to hear about legitimate assembly work at home jobs that you have PERSONALLY discovered and found to be credible. Please do contact me here with the details and I'll be happy to share them on this page.
