Home Based Data Entry Jobs

Home based data entry jobs DO exist and it IS possible to bring in some extra money each month with this type of work. However, it's important to know exactly where to look and to learn the pitfalls to avoid... and the purpose of this page is to point you in the right direction!

Home based data entry jobs

What exactly are home based data entry jobs?

Actually, that's an interesting question, as the term doesn't denote a particular job or type of data that has to be entered!

In fact, it's a very broad description which could really be used to describe lots of different types of work that involve entering some form of data into something else. It can include anything from completing surveys to certain types of administrative work.

When we search for home based data entry jobs, however, most of us are thinking about relatively unskilled work, inputting data - in other words, a simple job which we can fit around our other household committments.

Searching for home based data entry jobs - the pitfalls

For the very reason described above, home based data entry jobs are the types of home work most commonly sought on the internet, because data entry is seen to be fairly straightforward and easy to accomplish whilst caring for the home and the children too!

But the popularity of this type of work has two effects...

  • True, well paid home based data entry jobs that require no particular qualifications are not easy to come by (though they DO exist).
  • Scammers flood the internet with phoney positions, where either you PAY to receive job listings (which are usually worthless) or you ARE actually given work, but either don't get paid at all, or receive very little.
Unfortunately, the demand for unskilled home based data entry jobs is so high that the rates of pay you can expect to receive have been forced to a particularly low level.

But if your spelling/writing/grammar skills are reasonably good and you can display competency (or provide a compelling employment history), then there are definitely opportunities out there!

Please remember:

There is no 'get rich quick'...

...particularly in the field of home based data entry jobs (otherwise WAHMS everywhere would be doing them!).

You should NEVER hand over money to receive a list of home based job openings and you should ALWAYS check out thoroughly any company with whom you are thinking about signing up. With the internet, this can be as easy as simply looking up 'reviews for name of company' and seeing what you discover. Don't be dissuaded by one or two negative comments (which can be a case of sour grapes from a disgruntled employee), but a general trend of negativity is an indication that the company should be avoided.

Also, be wary of handing over your email address, even if you are not being asked for money.

You could get a LOT of spam as a result... in fact, I really recommend opening an extra, free email account (with someone like Hotmail) just for dealing with your WAHM inquiries.

Home based data entry jobs - real, legitimate and FREE opportunities!

Mechanical Turk is run by Amazon and is a GREAT way to earn extra cash from home. The way it works is that employers (known as 'requesters') advertise jobs that need doing (HITS) and YOU bid to take on the work. There are thousands upon thousands of 'HITS' available doing a variety of taks, from correcting spelling, to translating, to writing articles. Mechanical Turk moves the money form the requester's account to yours once the job is completed.

Fiverr is a new and unique site where people request - or offer to do - all sorts of tasks for $5. Simply place an ad (which is free to do), clearly describing what you will do for $5 and - if it's a service people need - you can receive quite a few orders!

Elance is a reputable, established company where employers advertise a variety of positions for freelancers, including home based data entry jobs.

Two other sites listing freelance work (for free) are www.sologig.com and www.sunoasis.com.

Fusion Cash and InboxDollars are companies that require you to read emails, shop online and fill out forms and surveys. The companies have mixed reviews and I have never used them personally, but I have heard from some WAHMS that DO recommend them. Another, similar company - which is very selective but very reputable - is 2020 Research, which requires you to complete studies.

MyPoints is a well established company with a good reputation that offers gift cards and rewards for completing surveys and offers.

And even Google will pay you for submitting surveys!

For something a little different than your standard home based data entry jobs, check out KGB. KGB is one of those companies you see advertised that quickly answers questions sent to them via text messages. To be a KGB 'Special Agent' you need to complete a 'Challenge', demonstrating that you can answer questions quickly, knowledgeably or (where necessary) with a sense of humor!

Another interesting site is Daytipper.com. Every day, Daytipper publishes a selection of user-submitted tips. Some are rather obvious (save old toothbrushes for cleaning your shoes!), some are philosophical (appreciate what you have - life is never greener on the other side) and some are truly useful (learn how to clean your microwave with just a lemon!). Come up with tips of your own... and if you are one of the top three tip authors, with the most published tips within a given month, then you can win a cash prize of either $100, $75 or $50. OK, so it's not enough to retire on, but every little helps, right? And if you have loads of good ideas and can type quickly, each submission should only take you a few minutes (plus there's a character limit of 500 anyway, so the site is not expecting epic length tips!).

If you can produce neat, cursive handwriting, then check out Aria Calls and Cards, who will pay you to write out notes and letters on behalf of large companies.

If you have experience with medical billing, then you can apply for work to E-Billing Solutions.

Drivers' Guide often advertises for database helpers in the US and Canada.

If you have a particular field of expertise about which you could answer questions, then consider becoming a paid expert on Just Answer.
