Home Organization Tips

These home organization tips are helpful for work at home moms trying to maintain an office in the home. Working from home comes with the challenge of how to separate the office or work area from the rest of the living area.

It's important to be able to work efficiently while in the midst of your own household. These tips on getting organized will help you maintain that balance.

Keep a household notebook that lists all the chores that need to be done.

Have a daily list and have a weekly and even monthly list of chores. Even though you work from home, you may feel compelled to clean house, cook the meals, take care of household duties on top of working at your job. Making lists defines exactly what needs to get done and sets out specific tasks for each day, making it much easier to schedule the amount of time you need for household tasks - and those you can devote to business. (And whilst we're on the subject of household tasks, do check out flylady.net for some more great home organization tips).

Once your lists are made, you need to see which chore has to be done the most and then organize that area first.

For example, for me it's laundry duty. There are 7 of us in this family, so laundry isn't something that I can do just once a week... I have to do at least one load per day! So I find that good laundry room organization is vital, making it much easier for me to do this particular task as quickly as I can!

The same applies to cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Organization is the key to running a smooth household!

Take a look around in each area that you need to clean, deal with, etc. Think of ways you can make it a faster and easier task. If you look in your local grocery store, you will find a couple of aisles that contain plastic boxes in all shapes and sizes. Think about how you can use items such as those to declutter your home, making life easier and more organized.

Home Organization Tips for the Office Area

Depending on the type of 'at home work' you have, you need to be able to safely put away your work items at the end of the day.

This helps to keep the "home office" separate from the living space, and keeps your work items from being strewn across the house.

Perhaps you need a filing cabinet. Or a couple of plastic storage boxes. Or a wall shelf unit. Really, what you need to keep the home office organized depends on what you do. Sit down with your notebook and make a list of items that will help you to keep this area neat and organized.

Talk to your children - and your spouse - about the importance of respecting your work area and materials. Having everyone on the same page will make it much easier to maintain your working environment within the home.

If you need a phone at your work desk, I strongly recommend installing an extra line just for that purpose, or running a second phone at your desk from an existing line. This stops family members sitting at your desk during calls... making notes all over your work (I speak from experience!).

Finally - and one of the most important home organization tips for the work at home mom - is to remember it's okay to enlist the help of the other family members in these tasks.

Not only does it help YOU, getting your children involved in caring for the home teaches THEM important life skills they will need in the future.
